Grow Green Onions in 7 Days

It is amazing how fast food can grow with a little love & attention.  I started these green onion drums a week ago and they’ve already grown about 4 inches!  I showed a colleague and she said they can also grow in water but won’t live as long to produce.  So b if you’ve got some dirt lying around at home, this is a great way to start you off to sustainability.  Of course you probably can’t live on green onions alone, but planting some that grow this fast may boost your confidence and motivate you to continue growing your own food.

Here’s how I started, leftover green onions I had cut up for as meal.

I had an extra pot that I put a few scoops of sand in the bottom since it didn’t have drainage holes.

The I filled the rest of the pot back up with soil.

I removed the outer skin but left the roots intact.

Then, I simply planted the onions about halfway into the soil.

This is Day 1

Day 3

Day 7

I watered it maybe 3 times through the week and kept them indoors in front of my kitchen window for sunlight.  I’m excited to cut the tops and use them.  I want to know how long they keep on growing if I cut them over and over again.  This is not only a great way to b start growing food, but b a great experiment to do with the kids.

Here are some other ideas to try with the kids to grow food at home.  Let me know how it turns out for you!  Happy planting!
